The Denver Women’s Chorus Presents #LoveWins

Denver Women's Chorus, Rocky Mountain Arts Association News

The Denver Women’s Chorus proudly affirms the right to love, the right to marry, and the power of love to conquer hate with #LoveWins. Timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the concert takes place on May 15 and 16 at Denver’s Trinity United Methodist.

Under the direction of Artistic Director Mark Zwilling, the 130-plus voices of the Denver Women’s Chorus (DWC) will rejoice in the right of all people to love who they love and acknowledge the importance of protecting these rights during times of adversity. The Spring concert will feature a collection of anthems that ignite, encourage and rejoice including Love Wins (Carrie Underwood), All is Full of Love (Bjork), We Are Family (Sister Sledge), Being Alive (Company), Dear Theodosia (Hamilton), Unruly Heart (The Prom), Only Light, Only Love based on a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and much more.

“We are unapologetic and will sing it loudly! #Lovewins emphasizes love bringing us together and overcoming hate, prejudice and political divides,” said Zwilling. “It’s a terrific program coinciding with the anniversary of DOMA Supreme Court ruling, ahead of Pride celebrations and our participation at GALA.”

In June 2015, a landmark Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges held that same-sex marriage was a fundamental right protected by both the Due Process Clause and the Equal Protection Clause. The ruling required all states to perform and recognize the marriages of same-sex couples, leaving Section 2 of DOMA as superseded and unenforceable.

#LoveWins sets the stage for the chorus’s participation at GALA Festival in July, the five-day international celebration of the LGBTQ+ choral movement. The Denver Women’s Chorus and Denver Gay Men Chorus will be among the 150 LGBTQ and allied choruses from around the world, attending attend the annual event taking place in Minneapolis.

Additionally, this season DWC is collaborating with other local choruses to raise money for SafeHouse Denver. SafeHouse Denver serves survivors of domestic violence and their children through both an emergency shelter and non-residential counseling.

Denver Women’s Chorus performs #LoveWins May 15 at 7:30 pm, May 16 at 2:00 and 7:30 pm at Trinity United Methodist 1820 Broadway, Denver, CO 80202.
