Welcome

TO THE DENVER GAY MEN’S CHORUS

Instagram

One of my earliest memories from childhood was watching The Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights, right after Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.  Mom would make popcorn, and we’d drink grape juice and be enthralled with Davy Crockett, Swiss Family Robinson, and the antics of Chip ‘n Dale. So when I heard that the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus was working directly with Disney for a choral concert of their songs, I knew RMAA needed to be involved! The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus is only the third chorus in the world to perform this concert, and we are thrilled that you are here to enjoy it.

We hope this concert entertains, inspires, and empowers you to be your authentic self. In a world where legislation is being enacted to limit drag queen performances, ban books, and suppress LGBTQ+ rights, our choruses continue to raise their voices to tell their stories and create spaces to be safe, including our concerts.

This concert series is DGMC Artistic Director James Knapp’s penultimate concert with DGMC, and as we look to the next chapter for RMAA, we are determined to continue building community through music and provide a voice for those who are often not heard. We appreciate your support, especially if this is your first time at a Denver Gay Men’s Chorus concert. We hope to see you all again soon!

Dear Patrons and Fellow Mouseketeers,

Welcome to the beautiful Ellie Caulkins Opera House and the Wonderful World of Disney. The Chorus has wished upon this star many, many times to have a full-length Disney program with an orchestra. This collaboration is the first time Disney Concerts, Inc., has partnered with gay choruses to create an LGBTQ-specific concert package. Dreams really do come true!

Disney movies and musicals have long resonated deeply in the LGBTQ+ community because they often mirror experiences in a society that hasn’t always been welcoming. Characters are often struggling to fit in and to accept themselves and long for a love that feels unattainable. Some have lost their family of origin and had to create a new one, yet they stayed the course and find joy in life. They express their alienation, desire, and determination in beautiful songs that have given solace and empowerment to generations of LGBTQ+ people. In these performances, Disney’s beloved catalog of songs has been reimagined through this LGBTQ+ lens in a musical celebration of life, love, family, and perseverance.

This concert draws inspiration from iconic Disney films and the magical music of Disney Parks. The multimedia extravaganza features DGMC’s 120 voices and a 25-piece orchestra accompanied by choreography and visuals using assets from Disney’s films and archives. In addition, an array of diverse chorus members will provide the narrative of the show with personal stories interwoven throughout and showcasing the individual meaning and connections drawn from Disney’s timeless and universal music.

We hope that you have a stunning ride on this Disney musical roller coaster and that you laugh and smile ’til it hurts, cry a few tears, and see and hear the magic in our gift to you.

Thank you so much for being here and for your continued support.

“Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, dreams are forever.” — Walt Disney

Denver Gay Men’s Chorus
Icons and Justice Warriors

On June 9 and 10, Yvie Oddly joins the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus on stage as a special guest during Divas: Icons and Justice Warriors.  DGMC’S Pride month concert event is a tribute to the music and performers of legendary women who have changed the world. DGMC will feature some of the most important and talented musical icons over the past several years.  From Donna Summer to Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand to Madonna and Dolly Parton to Rhianna these artists helped teach the gay community how to find their true selves, and their community.

DCMC will make the thematic connections between these artists’ journey and the LGBTQ experience explicitly by infusing the music with the stories of our lives and how these artists intersected with gay culture and history to further the cause of social justice.

Other featured artists will be Whitney Houston, Adele, Cher, Patsy Cline, Bette Midler, Beyonce and Bonnie Tyler.

It will be a concert of diva-tastic and diva-ganza of the best of the best!

Audience

INFO

The health and safety of all artists, members, and patrons remain our top priority. At present for our upcoming live season, masks are not required nor do you need to show your vaccine card at the door. All performers, volunteers and staff are fully vaccinated.

We are committed to the health and safety of our singers, artists, staff, and audiences. You, as a member of the audience, play an important role in helping us ensure that safety.

In turn, know that our commitment extends from the moment you purchase your ticket until the moment you leave the venue after the curtain call.

You can count on us to do three important things: to keep your safety and comfort top of mind, to be transparent about procedures and protocols, and to be timely about notifying you if anything changes.

We will update this page and inform all ticket holders as guidelines change.

All current DGMC staff, volunteers, instrumentalists, and singers are fully vaccinated and have complied with COVID-19 guidelines throughout the planning and rehearsal process. We are working to eliminate as many touch-points as possible, including contactless mobile ticketing, digital programs, and more.

These safety protocols will be updated periodically in accordance with the RMAA COVID Task Force, CDC, state, and local recommendations regarding singing and performing in large groups.  As such, all concerts and events are subject to change.

About DGMC

The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus has been an LGBTQ catalyst for change through musical excellence since its founding in 1982. With more than 300 concerts during its 41-year history, this 140-member ensemble is now recognized as the premier gay performing arts organization in the Rocky Mountain Region. Through its diverse and socially charged programming, DGMC’s reimagined choir concerts entertain, educate, inspire, and empower audiences to foster acceptance and tolerance throughout the greater Denver area and along Colorado’s Front Range communities.

DGMC has performed in Denver and around the U.S. in acclaimed concert halls including Boettcher Concert Hall, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Gates Hall, the Paramount Theatre, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and Carnegie Hall. Additionally, they have delivered groundbreaking performances at Coors Field, in the US Air Force Academy Chapel, and on the steps of the Colorado State Capitol as part of both inaugural festivities for Governor Jared Polis. They have traveled to 12 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada and have made joint appearances with several gay men’s choruses in major U.S. cities.

They have premiered new-commissioned choral works by 14 composers, including Andrew Lippa, Nathan Hall, Alan Shorter, James Deignan, and Craig Carnahan. Guest artists that have given extraordinary performances alongside DGMC include Alan Cummings, Margaret Cho, Diane Schurr and Ann Hampton Calloway. DGMC has performed twice with the Colorado Symphony.

In the name of advocating for a better tomorrow, DGMC has collaborated with The Matthew Shepard Foundation, the LGBT Community Center of Colorado, the Colorado AIDS Project, One Colorado, the Boulder County AIDS Project, Out Boulder County, the Colorado LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, PFLAG Boulder County, and the It Gets Better campaign. In order to raise community awareness of issues surrounding homelessness and housing insecurity, DGMC committed to a yearlong Street Requiem Project in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins. In 2018, they began pioneering an educational outreach program to nurture safe learning environments and support anti-bullying efforts in Colorado schools.

During its 40th anniversary season, DGMC collaborated with world-renowned Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, a first for both organizations.  Aurora’s Rangeview High School Choir joined DGMC for the Colorado premiere of “The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed,” a powerful multi-movement piece inspired by the last words of seven unarmed black men. DGMC commissioned and premiered a new 70 minute musical “Unbreakable” by Broadway Composer Andrew Lippa spanning 120 years of LGBTQ+ history in the United States.

DGMC’s future is full of endless possibilities as their mission statement, “building community through music,” drives their imaginative motivation for success!
